At first glance, this photo looks completely ordinary. Three women are enjoying a beautiful sunny day in the park, smiling and posing together as they appear to sit casually on a wooden bench.
Everything seems perfectly normal… until you take a closer look. 👀
The red circle may make you think the mystery has something to do with their legs. You might start checking their knees, shoes, or trying to count how many legs you can see. But that’s exactly where the picture wants you to look.
The real mystery is much easier to miss.
Something important is missing.
Take a careful look underneath the three women. The bench appears to have a backrest, side supports, armrests, and legs—but where is the actual seat?
That’s right. There doesn’t appear to be a seat beneath them at all!
Yet the women look completely comfortable, as if they’re sitting normally. Your brain automatically recognizes the familiar scene of people sitting on a park bench, so it fills in the missing information without you even realizing it.
This is what makes the illusion so clever. Your eyes see one thing, while your brain assumes something completely different.
You may stare at the women for several seconds, searching for a strange limb or an impossible body position, while the real clue is sitting—or rather, not sitting—right underneath them.
Once you finally notice the missing seat, the whole photograph suddenly looks bizarre.
